Formula racing is still a team sport, though the main focus goes to the driver. The pit stop is extremely vital to the race as this is when the car repairs are conducted. Worn out tires are changed, damaged parts are replaced and many other services are carried out in a matter of seconds. The way the entire team comes together to work on the car is fascinating to watch. It is like a rehearsed dance practice when all of the members blend to do their functions without causing disturbances to the others.
The lollypop man (holding a symbol exactly like that) stops the car at a precise location. Immediately the Back and front areas are jacked up. Three team members work in synchrony, for changing the wheel; one removes and refits the nut, one for removing the old wheel and another for fitting the new one.
At the same time, the other team members make other required adjustments. Sometimes the angle of the wings will have to be altered, the down force levels will have to be adjusted, damaged body would have to be replaced ,broken components will have to be re designed and much more. All these would have to be done with maximum speed in minimum durations. The entire team will have to work as a single unit and finish the job before the race is restarted.
Every race car will have a mechanic as a standby in the back to make quick alterations if needed. As soon as the mechanics re done with their work, they move behind and raise their hands. This is a signal which the lollipop man understands and he then carefully navigates the car from its pit back onto the course.
Every action has to be quick and well rehearsed to ensure that the team does not fall behind in the race. This really calls for team work and cooperation.
